BUY

He just re-bought it. Shares are rallying today because analysts raised earnings expectations. He continues to expect at the end of this year and into next increasing orders for their EUV, a large $250 device that can cram as many advanced features on a chip as possible. Also, the valuation of ASML has fallen to an attractive though not cheap level at 25x PE, no longer 40x.

BUY

They report tomorrow. Earnings are often predictable, though you don't know what he trading and investment activity will be for GS. He expects earnings to be robust and the messaging positive. For GS he also wants to hear about their foray into retail, though this is absorbed in the stock price. BAC's retail operation has been successful, and he wants to hear about credit delinquencies given that consumer debt is at all-time highs. He expects more of the same from these two banks.

For mid-cap healthcare, we continue to see TMDX as very attractive. It is not cheap!, but we like its growth profile and moat. The stock has consolidated somewhat but remains up 71% this year. The next catalyst will likely be earnings (early November) and/or the acquistion of more aircraft (always possible). The stock jumped in late September on its inclusion in the S&P 600 index, and has drifted back since then, which is not unusual. There has been no negative company news. EPS estimates have ticked down slightly in the past month, but forecasts here are quite difficult as organ transplantation growth is certainly not linear. We remain quite comfortable with it overall.

BWXT pays a 0.8% dividend yield, is a $10.6B company, and trades at a fairly expensive valuation of 36X forward earnings. Sales growth has been decent, and margins have held up well over the years. It generates an OK amount of free cash flow, and we think it looks decent as part of a 'pick and shovels' way to play the nuclear energy sector. Expected growth is decent, we would be OK averaging in here as part of a long-term position, while acknowledging it has seen a strong runup recently, and its valuation is stretched.

Canadian Unemployment Rate Accelerates

The whole intention of raising interest rates is to stifle and slowdown the growth of the economy, in the case of an overheating economy. This is precisely what was accomplished with the Bank of Canada raising interest rates through 2022 to 2023, and as a result we are seeing the collateral damage of rising interest rates through the rise in the unemployment rate. The Canadian unemployment rate has risen from a multi-decade low of 4.9% to 6.6% as of the latest reading. This is still below highly worrying levels, but the trend is certainly worth keeping an eye on for continued deterioration in the economy. Eventually, we believe the offsetting impact from decreasing interest rates will help keep the unemployment rate subdued, but the timing of this is uncertain.
