Yields fall, stocks mixed
The U.S. 10-year yield fell to a 52-week low of 3.644% by Tuesday’s close, reflecting overwhelming sentiment that the U.S. Fed will cut interest rates shortly, perhaps by 50 basis points. That said, the rotation into value stocks wasn’t reflected in the day’s indices as the Dow slipped 0.26% while the S&P rose 0.42% and the Nasdaq 0.81% to return above 17,000.
Major movers: Oracle soared 11.39% after a strong report, Broadcom 5.25%, Hewlett Packard -8.66%, GM -5.44%, and Tesla 4.58%. Bitcoin added 1.45% to US$57,850.
The TSX sank 0.21% to close below 23,000 also in mixed trading. Energy and discretionary weighed on gains by healthcare and materials. Key names: Suncor -3.17%, CNQ -3.5%, Kinross Gold 6.23%, Energy Fuels 5.85%, and Precision Drilling -4.69%. Gold added US$10 to US$2,517 as WTI sank 3.6% to US$66.25.
