TSX flat, but Wall Street slips

Investors south of the border strapped on their seat belts Friday as stocks went on a volatile ride. The Nasdaq plunged below 15,000 in early trading as tech continued to get beaten, but then see-sawed between positive and negative before closing closed flat (shedding 10 points). That didn’t save the Nasdaq from retreating 3% for the week. The S&P slipped over 1% as the Dow fell 1.48% as these indices also lost ground for the week.

Financials, industrials, health and energy sank on Wall Street. Losing ground: Goldman Sachs at -3.92%, Western Union -6%, Chevron -2.61% and Walmart -3.2%. Perhaps surprisingly amid current Omicron fears was that travel and leisure names rebounded Friday. Live Nation surged 3.57% and Royal Caribbean jumped 5.25%. Not only that but the so-called lockdown winners soared: Zoom zoomed 9.51% and Peloton raced 6.63%. Meanwhile, FedEx delivered a blow-out quarter and forecast and rallied nearly 5%, while Moderna climbed 4.53%. The U.S. 10-year, though, ticked down to 1.41% while Bitcoin shed 4% to $46,000.

Once more, things were calmer in Canada where the TSX closed exactly flat at 20,739 and was down 0.7% for the week. Real estate, telcos and tech rallied while energy sagged. Changing the most hands were Baytex, down 2.79% and Tamarack Valley, slipping 2.77%. Other oil names also fell as crude oil WTI declined to $70 a barrel and WCS to around $55.50. However, Bombardier rallied 5.88%, weed names Organigram and Canopy both jumped 6% and Blackberry advanced 5.18%.
