TSX closes above 24,000
Markets roared Thursday on both sides of the border. News of economic stimulus in China as well as the U.S.’s Q2 GDP beating expectations fueled optimism (or euphoria) on Bay and Wall streets. The TSX closed above 24,000 for the first time, at 24,038 after climbing 0.56%. Only energy and telcos showed weakness, while tech, discretionary, utilities and materials offered strength.
Major movers: Hudbay Minerals 7.63%, BlackBerry 6.81%, Capstone Copper 6.24%, Baytex -5.39% and Ivanhoe Mines 5.73%. Gold continued reach its own highs, adding US$14 to US$2,670, though WTI sank 3.25% to US$67.40.
The S&P rallied 0.4% to a new high of 5,745. The Nasdaq jumped 0.63% and the Dow 0.62%. Major movers: Micron soared 14.73% on earnings, Estee Lauder 9.99%, Albemarle 9.9%, and United Airlines 8.76% though Super Micro Computer closed at -12.17%. The U.S. 10-year stayed put around 3.796% as Bitcoin rose 2% to US$64,750.
