TSX climbs on MLK Day
With Wall Street closed Monday to honour civil rights leader Martin Lither King, Jr., the TSX advanced 0.34%, closing on strength, to return to 21,000. All sectors except two rallied, led by strong gains in consumer staples as well as dividend-paying utilities and telcos. Materials lagged, but only marginally.
TD was the most influential name by rising 1.23%. Also advancing were Denison Mines by 6.06%, Athabasca Oil at 4.78%, Interfor up 3.63%, Northland Power by 2.19%, though Wesdome Gold Mines closed -2.81%. Neighbourly Pharmacy announced it was going private, and shares soared 15.56%. WTI crude declined 0.25% to trade at $72.50.
American markets reopen Tuesday with more bank earnings.
