TSX and Dow make record highs
The week ended with investors seeing green in Toronto as well as New York. The TSX made yet another record close after rising 0.67% Friday to 22,695. The Canadian index finished nearly 3% higher for the week.
The most influential names were TD up 0.82%, CNQ -1.28% and Barrick Gold 2.06%. Elsewhere, Aritzia soared 14.82% and Spin Master jumped 5.92%. Gold declined a modest US$4 to US$2,411, while WTI crude slipped 0.5% to US$82.20.
Wall Street, too, saw more records broken on Friday as the Dow topped 40,000 and the S&P breached an intraday high. They both rallied over 0.6% for the day, and the Nasdaq nearly as much. For the week, the Dow rose 1.6%, the S&P about 0.9% and the Nasdaq less than 0.3%. Most influential were Nvidia by 1.51%, Tesla 3.14% and Apple 1.28%. Friday saw American bank earnings and those stocks sliding, such as Wells Fargo down over 6%. Meanwhile, Ford gained 4.34%. Lifting sentiment the past week were light inflation numbers and dovish comments made by the U.S. Fed’s Jerome Powell, which increased hopes of a rate cut in September.
