Thursday markets recover early losses
North American stocks were extending losses from previous sessions until they modestly rallied late in the day. The TSX closed 0.24% on the strength of all sectors except tech. The most active names were Athabasca Oil up 2.51%, Denison Mines jumping 10.4%, Baytex up 3.6% and Cenovus by 2.42%.
Heading south were cannabis names Tilray at -10.55% and Aurora at -6.75% as well as tech name Lightspeed at -3.7%. Crude oil inched up only marginally with WTI adding 0.75% to $97 a barrel and WCS up 0.25% to $83.60.
The TSX closed on session highs, but again, it was a different story on Wall Street. The indices were in the red Thursday until the final hours: the S&P 0.43%, the Nasdaq 0.06% and the Dow 0.25%. Healthcare continued to be strong with Thermo Fisher adding 4.22%. Also, Costco rose 3.98%, Target 5.67% and Constellation Brands 4.61%. Losses were less pronounced than previous days with Etsy closing -3.6%, Penn National -3.25%, though Twitter gave back 5.4% after its huge surge earlier this week. Real estate, financials and communications were weak, though consumer and tech showed some strength. The U.S. 10-year inched up to 2.64%.
