New highs despite modest gains

The Toronto and New York markets began the week inching higher, taking the S&P and Nasdaq to record closes. The S&P advanced 13 points, the Nasdaq 59 and the Dow 69 as markets were really in a holding pattern into the next U.S. Fed meeting on Wednesday.

Major movers on Monday included AMD at -4.66%, Constellation Energy 8.38%, Ford 1.89% and Southwest Airlines climbing 7.06%. Apple sank 2.07% after announcing its AI plans at its Worldwide Developers Conference that many felt were evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year-yield edged up to 4.467% as Bitcoin declined 0.4% to US$69,300.

The TSX rose 0.25% as most sectors climbed. Materials and energy led while staples tanked. Manulife rallied 1.46%, Cenovus 2.57%, Ero Copper 5.3% and Celestica 4.4%, but Telus slid 2.55%. Gold added US$15 to US$2,309 an ounce while WTI continued its run, surging over 3% to nearly US$78 a barrel.
