Grinch spoils Santa rally
The TSX reopened on Friday as the NYSE was already back in business. Both markets sank. Tech led the decline as the Nasdaq tumbled 300 points or 1.49%, the S&P fell below 6,000 after shedding 1.11% and the Dow slipped 0.77%.
Once more, Nvidia was the most-influential name, closing -2.06%, followed by Tesla at -5.02%. Other major movers were Lamb Weston, rallying 2.67%, Palantir at -3.68% and Vistra -3.73%. Gold declined US$17 to US$2,616 while WTI climbed 0.8% to US$70.20. The U.S. 10-year yield continued to inch higher, up to 4.627%.
The Canadian index fared a little better, slipping 0.2% or 50 points, to settle below 24,800. Only three sectors gained, however, including healthcare, while tech and industrial led the others down. Major movers: Onex 2.89%, CAE 2.21%, CIBC -2.03%, ATS -3.31% and Granite REIT -2.22%.
