Christmas Eve rally
Amid typically light trading in a shortened session, markets in Toronto ad New York rallied on the last day of trading before Christmas. The TSX advanced 0.4% or about 100 points as most sectors gained. Tech and energy led the way, while telcos and two other sectors lagged.
Major movers included Telus at -1.52%, Vermilion Energy 2.82%, Veren 2.31% and BlackBerry 4.05%. Gold climbed US$4 to US$2,616 while WTI crude rose 1.25% past US$70 a barrel.
On Wall Street, the S&P rallied 1.1% to regain 6,000, the Nasdaq 1.35% to top 20,000, and the Dow 0.91%. Once more, tech dominated the major movers: Tesla 7.36%, Super Micro Computer 5.96%, Broadcom 3.15% and Align Technology 2.86%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.589% while Bitcoin rebounded 5% to US$98,575.
