A mixed Friday ends a choppy week
Volatility reigned yet again as markets closed the week decidedly mixed. The S&P closed Friday up 0.21% and Nasdaq modestly rebounded by 1.43%, but the Dow finished -0.14% and the TSX -0.39% as oil prices slid on recession fears. For the week, the S&P was -5.79%, the Dow -4.79%, the Nasdaq -4.77 % and the TSX -6.6%. All this despite–and triggered by–the U.S. Fed hiking interest rates by 75 basis points this week. The U.S. 10-year retreated to 3.23%, Bitcoin lost another 2% to settle around $22,500 while WTI crude tanked nearly 6% below $110 and WCS below $90.
Major gainers in Toronto: Lightspeed up 7.05%, Aurora Cannabis 6.88%, and Ballard Power 6.34%. Losers were Vermilion Energy -8.59%, Birchcliff -7.39%, Meg -7.12% and Suncor -6.17%.
On Wall Street, Amazon gained 1.86% while travel names recovered some ground including Carnival up 9.49%, Norwegian Cruise Line 9.68% and American Airlines 6.33%. In contrast, Exxon closed -5.12% and Devon Energy -8.47%. Energy was the weakest sector by far on both sides of the border on recession fears.
