Tuesday started weakly, but the S&P and Nasdaq gained altitude during the session to land in record territory. The S&P added 0.22% to 5,372 and the Nasdaq 0.77% to 17,330. In contrast, the Dow sank 0.35% and the TSX lost 0.96%.
Big movers in New York started with Apple which soared 7.15% a day after announcing its first moves into AI. First Solar rose 5.91%, Paramount Global closed -7.85%, Southwest Airlines -5.67% a day after an activist investor dropped a bombshell report, and Bank of America -2.05%. The U.S. 10-year yield inched down to 4.398%. Bitcoin sank 3% to US$67,400.
Only telcos made gains as all other Canadian sectors lost ground. The TSX settled beneath 22,000. Staples, financials and materials led the selling. Enghouse jumped 4.06% while Manulife closed -1.74%, Nexgen Energy -5.46%, Cameco -5.29% and Denison Mines -5.14%. Gold added US$5 to US$2,315 an ounce while WTI was flat, holding below US$78 a barrel. All eyes will be on the U.S. Fed announcement tomorrow.
