Yields and stocks climb, oil falls
Stocks in Toronto and New York inched higher, even as yields rose. The TSX added 0.35% as most sectors rallied, particularly staples and financials. Major movers included Algoma Steel jumping 7.48%, Energy Fuels 5.14%, Telus 1.91% on an upgrade, while OceanaGold ended Monday -3.69% and Athabasca Oil -3.44%. WTI crude plunged 5.5% after Israel announced it would avoid oil targets in Iran as bombing continues in that region. Gold gave back US$5 to US$2,742.
The price of gold and the major indices in Toronto and New York continue to hover below all-time highs. The S&P rose 0.27%, the Nasdaq 0.26% and the Dow 0.65%. The U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.274%. Major names on Wall Street included carmakers Tesla -2.17% and Ford up 2.48%, the cruise line Carnival at 4.69%, 3M 4.58% and Albemarle 4.57%. Bitcoin rallied 3% to US$69,680.
