Wall St. extends Xmas rally
With the TSX closed Monday, Wall Street picked up the slack by extending its pre-Christmas gains to record heights. While the Dow advanced nearly 1%, both the Nasdaq and S&P rallied 1.39%. For the S&P, it set its 69th record close for 2021. There was green across the screen, led by cars, semis and energy. Telcos were a rare weak spot during typically light holiday volumes.
Among the big gainers: Tesla 2.52%, Fortinet 5.34%, Nvidia 4.4%, AMD 5.62%, Ralph Lauren 4.23% and Meta/Facebook 3.26%. Other megacap tech rallied as Apple and Microsoft climbed 2.3%.
Lagging were travel names, such as Las Vegas Sands, down 1.87% and Norwegian Cruise Lines losing 2.55%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield slipped to 1.482%, gold held at $1,812 an ounce while Bitcoin advanced 1.8% to nearly $51,300. The TSX remains closed Tuesday.
