TSX hit record, AI tech revives
The trading week ended with holiday cheer as the major indices marched higher, including a new record close for the TSX. The Canadian index rallied 1.01% on Friday to 31,757 and gained 0.72% for the week. Tech and materials led seven sectors higher while healthcare led the four laggards. Of note were Celestica up 9.21%, Energy Fuels 8.1%, Denison Mines 7.34%, New Gold 6.8% and Discovery Silver -3.23%. Silver extended its record streak after jumping over 2.5% to US$67.10. Gold added $5 to US$4,338 while WTI advanced half-a-dollar to US$56.65.
The American indices flirted with record highs. The S&P climbed 0.88% on Friday, the Nasdaq 1.31% and the Dow 0.38%. For the week, the S&P was barely positive while the Nasdaq rose 0.5% and the Dow slipped 0.65%. Notable names included Carnival, cruising 9.81% higher, and Moderna surging 9.21%. AI rebounded with Nvidia up 3.93% and Oracle 6.63%. In contrast, Nike slipped 10.54%. Bitcoin rebounded 2.7% to US$87,910. The U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 4.149% to cap a quiet week.
