TSX climbs, Wall St. edges up
The TSX enjoyed a 1.09% rise on Tuesday led by a surge in energy and materials. Influential movers were Suncor, up 2.39%, Athabasca Oil jumping 11.29%, Baytex rising 5.91% and Cenovus advancing 4.68%. In addition, Air Canada climbed 3.67% and Yamana Gold added 2.63%.
Losing ground were ATS Automation down 7.05%, Calfrac Well Services slipping 6.2% and some cannabis names such Aurora shedding 4.21%. The TSX gained despite WTI falling over 2% to below $103 a barrel and WCS slipping to $90.
Compared to recent volatility, Wall Street markets were quiet with stocks edging in both directions until settling modestly higher. The S&P added 0.48%, the Nasdaq 0.22% and the Dow 0.2% as investors wait for the Fed to announce its next interest rate hike on Wednesday. Rallying were American Airlines up 3.07%, Diamondback Energy jumping 6.75%, and Western Digital soaring 14.47%. Losers included Expedia falling 14.02%, Estee Lauder down 5.8% after a weak forecast and Booking Holdings retreating 3.97%. The U.S. 10-year yield inched down to 2.981% while Bitcoin slid 1.7% to around $37,600.
