Stocks rally on hopes of shutdown ending
The U.S. Senate appeared to be making headway in ending the historically long government shutdown, which sparked a Monday rally in stocks, minerals and cryptos. The S&P jumped 1.54% or over 100 points, the Nasdaq 2.27% and the Dow 0.81%. Gains were seen across the board, none more so than in tech. Nvidia soared 5.79%, Palantir 8.81%, Tesla 3.66% and Western Digital 6.91%. Elsewhere, Albemarle rallied 6.59% and Bitcoin climbed 1% to US$105,575. The U.S. 10-year yield edged up to 4.118%.
Similarly, the TSX gained 1.37% or more than 400 points. Nine sectors rose, led by outsized gains in tech and materials, which saw the biggest winners: Barrick Gold 5.28%, B2Gold 4.74%, and Discovery Silver 14.08%. In other sectors, Whitecap Resources rose 2.67% and Curaleaf by 11.29%. Gold itself popped US$111 to US$4,112 while WTI increased 0.65% to US$60.15.
