Stocks fade in choppy session
After yesterday’s highs, Thursday’s market was decidedly more volatile with the major indices swinging before settling in the red. The exception was the Dow, though it gained only 0.11%. The S&P closed -0.13%, the Nasdaq -0.72% and the TSX -0.54% to fall below 33,000. Even precious metals gave back their gains with silver and gold declining 0.6% to US$115.80 and US$5,385 respectively. A day after the U.S. Fed held interest rates flat, the U.S. 10-year yield remained around 4.231%.
Earnings from the day before influenced the American market. Meta soared 10.4%, but Microsoft plunged 9.99%. Meanwhile, the travel stocks soared: Norwegian Cruise Line by 10.25%, Royal Caribbean 18.65% and Southwest Airlines 18.7%. In Toronto, gold stocks suffered losses: B2Gold -4.09% and Kinross -4.34%. Meanwhile CP rallied 5.12% and Celestica tumbled 13.54%. The TSX was mixed with energy outpacing all, but tech and materials falling the most.
