Stocks edge up on Xmas Eve
Volumes were typically low during the shortened trading session on Christmas Eve, but markets still gained. Moves were modest either way, but the Nasdaq climbed 0.22%, the Dow 0.6% and the S&P 0.32%, but set a record close of 6,932. In Canada, the TSX was essentially flat, shedding 43 points from Tuesday’s record high, but remained over 32,000.
Major movers on Bay Street included Celestica up 1.71%, Iamgold -2.47%, B2Gold -1.22%, Cargojet 1.61% and Brookfield Business Partners 2.05%. Sectors were mixed with telos leading, but materials and healthcare lagging the most. In New York, Nike jumped 4.64%, Micron 3.77% and Target 2.36% while Datadog closed -2.26% and Carnival -1.3%.
Silver continued its record-breaking run after adding 0.6% to US$71.85 as gold gave back US$5 to US$4,478. WTI was flat at US$58.35, as was the U.S. 10-year yield at 4.134%. Santa has been good to investors throughout 2025. Year-to-date, the TSX has rallied over 29% and the S&P nearly 18%. Stockchase wishes everyone a merry christmas!
