Stocks drift amid earnings
Tuesday saw the major indices drift downwards to start August amid a flurry of earnings reports. The TSX closed -0.45% as only three sectors, led by energy, rallied, and the others sank, especially materials and utilities.
Despite reporting a miss, TFI International climbed 3.13%. Meanwhile, Linamar advanced 2.03%, the Bank of Nova Scotia closed -1.3% and Kinross Gold -3.5%. WTI held at just below $82 a barrel.
On Wall Street, the Dow briefly touched a 52-week high of 35,679 and managed to close 0.2% higher. In contrast, the S&P finished -0.27% and the Nasdaq -0.43%. Many major movers reported with varying results. Uber closed -5.68%, JetBlue -8.3%, Caterpillar 8.85% and AMD jumped 2.8% and rose even further after hours when it reported. Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line plunged 12.05%. The U.S. 10-year yield returned to 4% as Bitcoin shed 0.2% to trend below $29,200.
