Stocks climb, reducing weekly losses
The wild week ended on a calm note Friday as the New York and Toronto indices gained modestly. The TSX added 0.2% though sank 1.8% during the shortened trading week. Canadian unemployment remained unchanged in July. Minerals were among the day’s key movers: Iamgold up 15.35%, B2gold -11.55% and Lundin Mining 4.73%. Also, CCL rose 4.05% though Algonquin Power slid 12.6% after a dividend cut. Gold gave back US$3 to US$2,430.
In New York, the S&P was flat for the week, but rose 0.46% for the day. The Nasdaq slipped 0.18% for the week but advanced 0.56% Friday. The Dow added 0.11% Friday but performed -0.6% during the week. Key names: Expedia 10.16%, Eli Lilly 5.25%, Intel -3.64%, Palo Alto 4.61% and Las Vegas Sands -3.34%. The U.S. 10-year yield remained right below 4% while Bitcoin slipped 1.7% to US$60,650.
