Stocks and oil edge up pre-Xmas
Friday saw a modest Santa Claus rally as all the major indices closed positive and gently rose during a low-volume session. Friday halted a losing streak this week. The S&P finished 0.57% on Friday and -0.23% for the week, the Nasdaq 0.19% for the day but -2% during the week, and the Dow added 0.51% Friday and gained 0.85% over the week. Most sectors were higher.
Gainers included Amazon up 1.64%, Hess 4.72% and Halliburton 4.13% as energy enjoyed a strong rally. However, Moderna slid 4.42% and Tesla fell another 1.51% as the heaviest-traded stock.
WTI crude spiked 2.76% to nearly $80 a barrel. By far, energy was the strongest sector, followed by utlities and materials on Bay Street. Tech was among the few laggards. The TSX advanced 0.78% Friday and added 0.26% for the week. TC Energy changed the most hands and popped 2.33%, Suncor jumped 3.38% and Athabasca Oil soared 9.3%. In contrast, CIBC declined 1.08% and Canada Goose dove 4.32%.
