Stocks and Bitcoin rebound
After a volatile week of losses, markets in Toronto and New York convincingly rebounded to finish the week positive. On Friday, the TSX rallied 1.4% of 452 points to close 1.7% higher for the week. Materials, which led the week’s slump, healthcare and energy led stocks higher while telcos were among only two sectors that lost ground. Bay Street’s big movers: ARC Resources -10.12%, Bitfarms 25.32%, Baytex 4.54%, CNQ 2.89% and New Gold 11.9%. Silver bounced 8.75% to US$77, but was still far from recent highs, gold added 3.5% to US$4,950 while WTI inched up by 0.25% to US$63.45.
In New York, the S&P advanced over 2% to nearly break even for the week, the Nasdaq rallied 2.26% on Friday and slightly more for the week, while the Dow closed above 50,000 for the first time after jumping 2.5%% for the session and 2.2% for the week. Major movers: Amazon -5.58%, Intel 4.88%, Nvidia 8.07%, Alphabet -2.43% and Robinhood 13.9%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.2% while Bitcoin soared 11% to US$70,000 but remained well off its highs.
