S&P hits new high
A late-day surge pushed tepid markets higher to close Thursday, as the S&P topped 6,100 and made a new high. The Dow rallied 0.92% and the Nasdaq edged up by 0.22%.
Among the major movers on Wall Street were GE, up 6.6%, Enphase Energy 5.41%, United Airlines, sinking 4.6% after issuing weak guidance, and similarly Electronic Arts tumbling 16.7% after revising its own forecast. Oracle praised the potential of AI in developing cancer vaccines which helped boost Moderna 10.1%. Bitcoin gave back nearly US$1,000 to US$103,000, while the U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.64%.
Most sectors rallied on Bay Street as the TSX advanced 0.35% to 25,400. Discretionary, staples and utilities led the gainers while energy lagged the most. Key names: Badger leapt 8.83%, Aecon 7.28%, Royal Bank 0.84% 0.84%, B2Gold -3.46% and Birchcliff popping 4.47% after receiving three analyst upgrades. Gold slipped US$3 to US2,753 while WTI gave back US$1.20 to US$74.30.
