Russian tensions weigh on stocks, lift oil
Just as markets were digesting hawkish comments from the St. Louis Fed calling for sharp rate hikes, signals of Russia about to invade Ukraine weighed on market sentiment. The result on Friday was the S&P closing -1.9%, the Nasdaq -2.78% and the Dow -1.43%. The S&P shed nearly 2% for the week while the Nasdaq lost 2.4. In contrast, WTI crude oil jumped 3.8% to nearly $94 a barrel while WCS leapt nearly 4% by the close to almost break $80. The U.S. 10-year yield surpassed 2% during Friday, but closed around 1.918%. Oil’s gains helped the TSX finish in the green, though by only 17 points. However, for the week Canadian stocks outperformed American ones as the TSX rose 1.3%.
On Wall Street, big gainers were Newell Brands jumping over 11%, Occidental Petroleum 5.65%, Northrop Grumman 4.53%. In contrast, the chipmakers plunged AMD and Xilinx both sank 10% and Nvidia lost 7.26%. Travel names also took a hit, such as American Airlines diving 5.88%. Even Bitcoin closed down by 3.3% to around $42,600. In Toronto, enrgy and materials soared ghile consumer discretionary and industrials sank. Gainers included Iamgold popping nearly 10%, Silvercrest Metals climbing 9.42%, Suncor 4.55% and Baytex Energy 5.88%. Laggards were Lightspeed which closed -7.6%, Magna -6.54% and Canada Goose -6.08%.
