Oil climbs, stocks moderately move
The week began with WTI closing in on $83 a barrel after rising 2.3%. Energy and real estate’s gains almost offset staples, materials and other laggards on By Street. The shed 12 points on Monday in mixed trading.
Notable names included Vermilion Energy up 5.04%, BlackBerry -6.79%, Alimentation Couche-Tard -3.42%, Aritzia -3.18% and Nuvei which soared nearly 32% after reports of a possible buyout. Gold edged up to $2,160 an ounce.
Wall Street enjoyed modest gains: the S&P rose 0.63%, the Nasdaq 0.82%, and the Dow 0.2%. Key names included Tesla up 6.25%, Super Micro Computer closing -6.38% and Abbott Labs -2.64%. Making headlines was Alphabet’s Gemini AI being considered for Apple’s iPhones. Alphabet rallied (A class) 4.6% on the news while Apple advanced 0.64%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield edged up to 4.33% as Bitcoin slipped 1.6% to $67,200.
