More record highs amid earnings

The indices were mixed on Thursday, with the TSX and Dow modestly falling, but the S&P and Nasdaq climbing once more to record highs. The TSX closed down 19 points, the Dow -0.7%, the S&P added 0.07% and the Nasdaq 0.18%. Earnings dominated headlines. Tesla reported some of its weakest growth in years and shares were punished by 8.2% in heavy trading. In contrast, Nvidia continued its winning streak by adding 1.73%, and Alphabet impressed the street which lifted shares by 1.02%. However, Dow sank 17.45% and Chipotle fizzled by 13.34%. Bitcoin gained 1.15% to US$119,370 while the U.S. 10-year yield rose to 4.4%.
Seven sectors rallied on Bay Street with strng gains in real estate and health care offsetting losses in materials and discretionary. Whitecap Resources was an influential name, rallying 5.89% after delivering a slam-dunk beat. Also soaring was FirstService, up 8.89% and Baytex at 1.76%. However, Orla Mining slid 14.36% and Teck Resources tumbled 8.67%. Gold declined US$15 to US$3,372 while WTI oil shaved nearly a dollar to US$66.20.
