Markets inch down on a quiet Tuesday
It was a quiet session on the markets Tuesday as the major indices in Toronto and New York ticked down a few points. For example, the Dow closed -0.11% with its major components mixed.
Big gainers included Walgreens jumping 4.38%, while Nike closed -1.96% and Dow -1.69%. In tech, Amazon added 1.44% and Baidu 2.51% though BioNTech slid 4.58% and Affirm Holdings gave back 3.26% after soaring the day before. Zoom Video delivered a decent quarter by beating revenues, but didn’t raise guidance going forward which disappointed investors, arguably with high expectations. Zoom plunged 16.69%.
In Toronto, industrials and materials nearly carried the Canadian index into the green, but were weighed down by financials and consumer staples. Changing the most hands were Canadian Pacific which fell 4.55%, even though federal regulators rejected a key part in rival Canadian National’s bid to buy Kansas City Southern. Apparently, that bad news was a blessing, since CN shares popped 7.36%. Other winners included Equinox Gold, up nearly 6% and Parex Resources rising 5.25%. In contrast, Russel Metals finished the day -2.64% and West Fraser Timber at -1.93%. Both WCS and WTI prices slipped 1%.
