Markets fade at close

Markets in Toronto and New York cruised positively for most of Tuesday, but ran out of steam by the closing bell. The TSX shed 0.14% with only healthcare and a handful of sectors ending positive. Consumer staples and energy were particular laggards.

Notable names were Canada Goose sinking 6.73% after announcing executive layoffs. Suncor ended the day -0.92% and Athabasca Oil -4.95%, though Nuvei jumped 6.9% and Tilray 7.19%. Gold edged up to $2,196 an ounce while WTI crude retreated 0.6% to $81.50 a barrel.

On Wall Street, the S&P slipped 14 points, the Dow shed 31 points and the Nasdaq declined 0.42%. Of note were Tesla which rallied 2.92%, Ford which closed -3.57%, UPS -8.16% and Dominion Energy -3.25% as energy lagged. McDonald’s announced it would carry Krispy Kreme donuts, whose stock soared 39.36%. Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.232% while and Bitcoin declined 0.23% to $69,700.
