Flat day, weak month
Tuesday’s session found the market unsure what direction to take and ultimately ended fairly flat. On Wall Street, the S&P closed -0.16% to remain below 4,000 and -2.61% for the month, the Nasdaq up eight points but -1.11% for February, and the Dow -0.66% or -4.19% for the month.
Meta surged 3.61%, Keurig Dr. Pepper slipped 2.33%, cruise liner Norwegian sliding 10.79%, Applied Materials rallying 4.04% and Goldman Sachs plunging 3.74%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 3.93% while Bitcoin declined 0.8% to around $23,200.
It was a similar story on Bay Street as the TSX shed 0.22% for the day and -2.76% for February as oil prices have weakened. Materials spiked, but energy lagged, even though WTI advanced 1.7% to $77 a barrel and WCS added 2.5% to $60.65. Major movers: Manulife 1.54% as it traded the most hands, Baxter tanking by 9.78% after announcing an acquisition, the Bank of Nova Scotia sliding 5.72% after a disappointing quarter, First Quantum Minerals rallying 6.77% and Stelco jumping 6.2%. Bank earnings will continue this week.
