Farewell Buffet and 2025

Wednesday marked the end of 2025, one of the best years for market returns, as well as the retirement of the greatest investor of all time, Warren Buffet. 

The last trading session of 2025 saw a modest sell-off in Toronto and New York: -0.48% on the TSX, -0.74% the S&P, -0.76% Nasdaq and -0.63% the Dow. Though a Santa Claus Rally failed to appear, the TSX ripped over 28% in 2025, beating the Dow at 13%, the Nasdaq at 20.3% and the S&P’s 16.4%. Despite this, the S&P enjoyed a third-straight year of double-digit returns while the Nasdaq rallied more than 20% over the same period.

On Wednesday only three sectors were positive in Toronto, led by telcos, while materials and healthcare lagged the most. To no surprise, trading volumes were light. The most active stocks were Telus, up 1.23% and TC Energy, down 1.36%. Energy Fuels rallied 2.16%, but Endeavour Silver sank 3.87% as silver slid another 5.2% to US$71. Gold gave back $30 to US$4,310 while WTI declined half a dollar to US$57.45. In New York, Nike leapt by 4.12%, but Fair Isaac fell 3.16%, Moderna slid 3.03% and AppLovin faded by 2.87%. The U.S. 10-year yield edged up 4.163% while Bitcoin declined US$580 to US$87,605.

The world’s greatest investor, Warren Buffett worked his last day as CEO of Berkshire. By applying his trademark value investing style, Mr. Buffet increased the share price of Berkshire since 1964 by 5,500,000% compared to a 39,000% gain by the S&P.
