TSX hits highs, Wall Street wavers
The TSX made another record high on Monday, closing up 0.87% to 22,009. Natural resources continued to surge, including uranium which helped propel Cameco by 6.75%. Other big movers were Lithium Americas up 8.12%, Vermilion Energy at 7.46%, Meg Energy by 6.82% and Tourmaline Oil surging 5.18%.
Laggards were West Fraser Timber at -7.11%, Well Health Technologies -5.51% and Interfor -4.37%. Despite new records on Bay Street, the Canadian dollar was still hovering below $0.80 against the USD. However, WTI crude jumped 7.5% to $112.50 and WCS rallied over 8.5% to above $99.
In contrast, American markets had a weaker session, especially after the U.S. Fed issued notice that it would raise rates by 0.5% if necessary. Stocks that had been showing gains turned negative, but recovered some ground by the close: the S&P flat at -0.04%, the Nasdaq -0.4% and the Dow -0.58%. Major movers were Diamondback Energy up 6.41%, Northrop Grunman by 4.36% and Pioneer Natural Resources at 4.72%. Losers were Domino’s Pizza at -3.76%, Home Depot -3.34%, Whirlpool -4.07% and Boeing -3.59% after a crash in China of yet another 737. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 2.299% while Bitcoin slipped 0.37% to $41,100.
