Stocks and oil retreat
Following a sharp rebound, stocks on Thursday drifted down, but do did oil. Markets seems to be grasping for a direction as Russian continues to attack Ukraine and the latest U.S. inflation numbers came in hot, though surprised few. The S&P closed -0.43%, the Nasdaq -0.95% and the Dow -0.34%. However, crude oil also traded down. WTI lost nearly 3% to trade below $106 while WCS slid 3.6% to below $94.
Notable gainers included Amazon which climbed 5.41% after announcing a 20-1 split; Mosaic up 7.74%, Halliburton 8.93% and Baker Hughes 8.67%. Laggards included Etsy at -5.35%, MSCI -4.69%, Whirlpool -4.22%, Apple -2.72% and AMD -4.13% as several semi names took a hit. While gold was flat, hovering right below $2,000, Bitcoin tumbled 5.5% below $40,000. The U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 1.99%.
The TSX actually ended Thursday in the green with tech being the only laggard, though financials slightly dipped into the red. Materials and energy led the rally. Western Copper and Gold jumped 9.54%, Capstone Mining added 7.25%, Nutrien advanced 6.91% and CNQ added 3.65% in heavy trading. In contrast, NFI Group plunged 22.45%, Pollard Banknote tanked by 28.66% and Shopify slid 6.23%.
