Another day, another all-time high
The last real trading day of 2019 ended with new record highs in the Dow, S&P and especially the Nasdaq which enjoyed its eighth-straight gain. The index rose 0.4% to close at 8,924 on Friday, and to climb a staggering 34.5% for the year to date.
Contributing to that accomplishment was cloud computing giant Microsoft, which rallied 1.09% to close at its own record high of $157.41. A year ago, it closed at $98.23. Tech enjoyed a fine Friday on this side of the border as well. BlackBerry slam-dunked its latest earnings report based on stronger-than-expected Q3 revenue and adjusted earnings and shot up 12.32%.That show promise for the cyber-security software company weather a difficult year, down 10% for 2019.
The TSX rose in line with its New York peers, climbing above 17,100. In contrast, Boeing continued to slide, down 1.65% Friday, as it failed to launch its Starliner capsule during a test. As Wall and Bay streets empty for the holidays, trading will be light, though this year’s Santa Claus is well under way. Stay warm.
