U.S. stocks mixed in light trading
With the TSX closed for the holidays, Wall Street was in business Tuesday, opening positive but fading into the close with mixed results. All the major indices closed near record highs, but the Nasdaq shed half a percent and the S&P dipped into the negative. Only the Dow finished in the green, up 0.27%.
Financials, healthcare and industrials were strong while tech and energy saw some weakness. Moves were undramatic.
Gainers included Disney up 1.68%, Campbell Soup 2.56%, American Airlines 2%, Walmart 1.55%, Boeing 1.57% and Dollar General 1.54%. After strong gains recently, tech gave back some ground, such as Adobe at -1.45% and Applied Materials at -1.89%. The U.S. 10-year yield came in at 1.484%, but Bitcoin slid 6.5% below $48,000. Meanwhile, WTI crude rode half a percent to $76 a barrel while WCS added even more to top $61. Gold ticked down slightly, but stayed above $1,800 an ounce. The TSX re-opens on Wednesday.
