TSX hits highs, Wall Street flat
It was a tale of two stock exchanges Tuesday as the TSX edged up 0.5% to a new high of 22,361 led by a surge in materials. Real estate and and nearly every sector also rallied as healthcare showed moderate weakness.
Among the big movers were BlackBerry which jumped 7.42% on an AI initiative, Hudbay Minerals 6.91%, Lundin Minerals 2.81% and Pan American Silver 6.63%, though Tilray plunged over 20%. Gold continued its own winning streak by rising to $2,350 an ounce while WTI crude retraced 1.25% to $85.30 a barrel. Bay Street largely expects the Bank of Canada to hold interest rates on Wednesday, perhaps for the final time before cutting later.
Wall Street continued to go sideways ahead of inflation data on Wednesday and Thursday with the sentiment drifting towards hotter inflation. The S&P added merely four points, the Dow shed 27 while the Nasdaq advanced 40 points to nearly 16,300. Major movers: Moderna 6.19%, Tesla 2.2%, Nvidia -2.13%, Palo Alto 3.93% and Comcast -1.38%. Bitcoin slumped 3.5% to $69,100 while the U.S. 10-year yield inched down to 4.358%.
