TSX hits high as Wall Street fades

WTI crude jumped 4.6% as tensions in the Middle East rose Wednesday after reports that the U.S. will evacuate its Iraqi embassy in Iraq, given heightened security concerns. WTI nearly touched US$68 a barrel and was instrumental in lifting the TSX 97 points to 26,524, a new high for the Canadian index. Consumer discretionary and tech also rallied, while staples lagged the most.
Major movers: Baytex 3.19%, Whitecap Resources 3.28%, Celestica 5.04%, Methanex 5% and Dollarama 9.8% after a strong report. Gold rose US$29 to US$3,353.
It was a different story on Wall Street where the S&P sank 0.27%, the Nasdaq fell 0.5% and the Dow was flat. Trade talks between the U.S. and China continued. Even a slightly better-than-expected inflation number for May (2.4% vs. 2.3% in April), didn’t lift sentiment. Major movers: Warner Bros. Discovery popped 5%, Starbucks 4.33%, GE Vernova 3.9%, Intel -6.34% and Nucor -6.06%. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down to 4.418% while Bitcoin slipped 1% to US$108,900.
