TSX flat, Wall Street rises to end upbeat week
In light trading volumes, the TSX recovered from a weak morning to close exactly flat though remains at a record high. On Wall Street, the main indices continued to march upwards as the Nasdaq rose 0.51% Friday or 420 points for the week, the Dow gained 0.89% or nearly 650 points for the week, and the S&P made another high, climbing 0.77% or 111 points over the week. The latter two indices made new record highs.
Back to the TSX: While the price of WTI and WCS slipped half-a-percent to drag down energy stocks, some cannabis names got high. Fire & Flower popped 10.71% while Aurora popped 4%. Corus Entertainment jumped 7% on a positive quarterly report. Green energy producer Boralex gained 4.3% while Kirkland Lake Gold shone 3.36%. In contrast, Denison Mines closed -7%, Peyto Exploration -3.31% and Enghouse Systems -3.13%.
The American reopening continues to feel optimism on Wall Street, especially in tech, consumer and financials. Honeywell climbed 3.24%, Salesforce 3% and UnitedHealth 3.13%. Microsoft touched new highs after advancing 1% while reopening play, Avis, rose 3.62%. On the flipside, Molson Coors and Conagra Brands both slid 3%. Even as tech rallied, the U.S. 10-year advanced 2% to 1.66%. Next week sees the start of American earnings season.
