TSX flat, U.S. Fed hangover
Thursday saw the Canadian market flat with the TSX gaining seven points while Wall Street continued to sell off a day after the U.S. Fed made hawkish comments about the trajectory of interest rates. The TSX was mixed with energy and industrials rallying, materials sinking and every other sector in between them.
Major Movers were Barrick Gold sinking 8.27%, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners shedding 2.59% and Lightspeed plunging 18.6%. In contrast, Suncor rose 3.88% in heavy trading while Baytex jumped 4.17%. WTI crude lost 2.2% to trade at $88 while WCS retreated 1.6% to $58.
In New York, the U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.145% as the major indices lost ground: the S&P -1.06%, the Nasdaq -1.73%, and the Dow -0.46%. The FAANG names continued to get hammered with Apple closing at -4.62%, Alphabet -3.85% and Amazon -2.78%. However, some tech rallied, including AMD up nearly 3% and Etsy jumping 14.23%. Also rallying was Royal Caribbean advancing 8.07%. Lastly, Bitcoin slipped modestly to $20,200.
