TSX climbs, Wall Street shaky
The TSX climbed 0.46% Wednesday to return above 25,000, mainly on strength from tech and materials. Tech led seven sectors down.
As gold advanced US$14 to US$2,663 an ounce, Equinox Gold popped 10.01% and Calibre Mining jumped 9.5%. Meanwhile, Celestica rallied 4.58%, Tilray sank 5.69% and TD slipped 0.71% as the most active name. WTI crude shed 1.2% to US$73.35 a barrel.
In contrast, the main indices on Wall Street narrowly escaped ending the session in the red. The S&P closed 0.11% and the Dow 0.22% after struggling for much of the day. The Nasdaq fared worse, down 0.16% Major movers: Ebay up 10.05%, Palantir -2.34%, Moderna -9.07%, Boston Scientific 4.37% and AMD -4.38%. The U.S. Fed released minutes of its December meeting which stressed fears that risks to inflation have increased, meaning fewer interest rate cuts this year than previously expected. The U.S. 10-year returned to 4.7% at one point, but faded to 4.677% by the closing bell. Elsewhere, Bitcoin slid 2.65% to US$93,920.
