Markets in Toronto and New York continued to sell-off Tuesday, though less dramatically than the session before, as the tariff war ensues. The TSX declined 0.54% or 132 points as only materials and one other sector gained. Staples and healthcare led the laggards.

Once again, Veren and Whitecap were among the most-active names after they announced a merger, up 3.17% and 3.88% respectively. BRP closed -4.53%, Telus -4.48% and Aya Gold & Silver 15.7%. Gold climbed US$27 to US$2,916 while WTI rose 55 cents to US$66.60.

Before the opening bell, Trump announced he would double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% to retaliate against Ontario slapping 25% tariffs on electricity to the U.S., which, of course, reacted to Trump’s initial tariffs against Canada and Mexico, America’s closest trading partners. By the closing bell, there were reports he “may” cancel those 50% tariffs, but keep the 25%. Meanwhile, U.S. stocks continued to fall: S&P -0.76%, Nasdaq -0.18% and the Dow -1.14%. The most-active names were Nvidia rebounding 1.66%, Tesla 3.79% though -42.95% for the year, and Palantir 2.19%. Also notable: Expedia -7.28% and Delta Airlines -7.25%. Bitcoin regained US$3,400 to US$82,700 while the U.S. 10-year yield crept up to 4.278% on fears of tariffs driving inflation.
