Tech propels TSX higher
The TSX enjoyed gains nearly across the board, but primarily driven by outperformance in tech and healthcare. Utilities and two other sectors suffered only mild losses after the TSX rallied 1.35% or 309 points. Among the key names were Descartes Systems surging 14.37%, EQB 12.85%, MDA Space 9.79%, Energy Fuels 6.55% and First Majestic Silver -4.24%. After making record highs, silver gave back 2.4% to US$57 while gold edged up US$5 to US$4,208. WTI rose 1.35% to US$59.75.
Wall Street saw only moderate gains: the S&P 0.11%, the Nasdaq 0.22% and the Dow slipped 0.0067%. Major movers included Dollar General up 14.01%, Sandisk 9.74%, GE Vernova 4.51%, Nvidia 2.11% and Intel slipped 7.45%. Meta announced deep cuts to the metaverse and shares popped 3.43%. Bitcoin slid 1.3% to US$92.500. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.102%.
