Tech pauses, but markets hit highs
The trading week ended up an upbeat note, even as red-hot tech took a breather on Friday. The S&P climbed 0.27% to make a new record high of 5,097. It rose 1.17% for the week. The Dow also made a new record by adding 0.31% to 39,192, and gained nearly 1% over the week. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq shed 0.16% on Friday but remained over 16,000 and advanced 0.57% for the week.
Notable names included Palo Alto which rallied 5.62%, Dominion Energy 5.11%, Etsy 4.3%, though AMD closed -2.85% and Warner Bros. Discovery -10.2%. The U.S. 10-year yield edged down to 4.252% while Bitcoin gave back 0.35% to nearly $51,000.
The TSX fell short of making new highs, but rose 0.51% Friday and 0.9% for the week. Most sectors gained, starting with materials, staples, financials and tech. Five sectors declined but only mildly, including telcos and utilities. Suncor traded the most hands and added 1.26%. Lundin Gold jumped 7.5% and Nuvei 6.5%, though Hudbay Minerals closed 4.72% and CNQ -1.32%. WTI sank 2.55% to $76.60 a barrel. Next week, Canadian investors will eye bank earnings.
