Strong earnings lift markets, oil slips
Ongoing strong earnings and a slight easing of tensions in the Middle East boosted stocks on Tuesday. The S&P closed 0.81% higher, the Nasdaq 1.03%, the Dow 0.73% and the TSX -0.21%. The semis were big winners, with Intel soaring 12.92% and Micron jumping 11.06%. Waters Corp. finished the day 13.54%, Fiserv -8.8% and Palantir -6.93%. Bitcoin rose another 2.1% to US$81,600 while the U.S. 10-year yield held at 4.42%.
Nine sectors rallied on Bay Street, led by healthcare and discretionary, but tech suffered heavy losses. Major movers: ATS 6.72%, Suncor 1.88%, Keyera -7.29%, Gibson Energy -5.86% and Shopify -15.65% after issuing a downbeat forecast. Gold declined US$34 to US$4,555, silver inched by 0.33% to US$72.85 while WTI tumbled 3.55% to US$102.05 on some optimism in the Middle East war.
