Stocks flat, Bitcoin rises
Canadian bank earnings season kicked off Tuesday with mixed results. Bank of Montreal missed and shares slid 3.56% while Bank of Nova Scotia beat and rallied 3.18% though rising loan delinquencies shadowed both. Financials were actually one of the few lagging sectors on Bay Street as staples and discretionary rallied. The TSX itself was flat.
Other notable names: Ballard Power up 6.33%, and steelmakers Stelco 6.19% and Algoma 5.98%. WTI advanced 1.35% to $78.65 a barrel.
Stocks were also mixed on Wall Street where the S&P gained 0.17% and the Nasdaq rose 039% to return above 16,000, but the Dow slipped 0.25% to fall below 39,000. Cruise lines were the day’s big winners as Norwegian soared 19.84% and Carnival 7.65%. Constellation Energy jumped 16.92%, but Hess finished -3.09% and Amgen -2.75%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.307%, while Bitcoin continued its winning streak by surging 4.2% to $56,800.
