Stocks fade, silver slides
Santa Claus was nowhere in sight on Bay or Wall streets Monday as the indices declined and minerals slid. The S&P closed -0.35%, the Nasdaq -0.5% or 118 points, the Dow -0.51% and the TSX -0.32% or over 100 points. Early in the session, silver soared to US$80 but tumbled $7 or 8.77% to US$72.30. Likewise, gold slipped $200 to US$4,335. By far, materials were the worst performer on the TSX while teclos and energy led seven sectors higher.
In Toronto, Telus rose 1.54% and Teck Resources 2.56%. However, Lithium Americas finished the session -6.2%, Orla Mining -5.64% and Agnico Eagle -5.25%. In New York, the big movers included Micron up 3.36%, eBay 2.97%, Tesla -3.27%, Newmont -5.64% and Albemarle -3.62%. WTI rallied US$1.10 to US$57.85. The U.S. 10-year yield slipped to 4.11%.
