Stocks climb, but choppy pre-Nvidia
Markets rallied Wednesday morning, but swung wildly for the rest of the day as investors waited for the most-anticipated earnings report of the season, Nividia. By the close, the S&P advanced 0.38%, the Nasdaq 0.59%, the Dow 0.1% and the TSX 0.82% or 247 points.
Nvidia rose 2.85% during the session and jumped 2.5-4.5% immediately after reporting earnings. Meanwhile Alphabet made a record high after jumping 3%, GE Verona popped 7.42%, Block 7.29%, but DoorDash sank 4.6%. In Toronto, tech and materials lead eight sectors highers, while healthcare was among the three laggards. Key movers; MDA Space 5.5%, Celestica 4.9%, Shopify 4.6%, Cameco 4.1% and Allied Properties REIT -2.27%.
In commodities, gold held around US$4,070, and WTI slipped 2% to US$59.50. Bitcoin fell 2.85% to below US$89,000. Finally, the U.S. 10-year yield remained around 4.131%.
