Stocks climb ahead of Fed announcement
Stocks in New York and Toronto marched upwards Tuesday on the eve of the U.S. Fed’s next interest rate announcement. The S&P advanced 0.53%, the Nasdaq 0.82% and the Dow 0.2%. The U.S. 10-year yield held around 4.33%.
Once more, the semis were in the spotlight at AMD closed -4.84% and Super Micro Computer -8.96%. Meanwhile, AES rose 4.43%, International Paper 10.96% and Apple 1.23%. However, Bitcoin sank 5.75% down to $63,700.
Across the border, the TSX added 0.14% as seven of 11 sectors gained, led by consumer staples and discretionary while materials lagged the most. Notable names included Gildan jumping 10.84%, Baytex 3.07%, BlackBerry -5.6%, First Majestic Silver -5.56% and West Fraser Timer advancing 3.23%. Gold stayed around $2,160 as WTI added another 0.88% to $83.45.
