Shopify helps TSX hit record close

Shopify reported an earnings beat and rosy guidance, which catapulted shares by 21.5% and lifted the TSX to another record close. The Canadian index jumped 1.27% or 35 points to 27,920, even though sectors were mixed. Outsized gains in tech led other areas and overcame laggards like telcos. Many mining stocks rallied, including SSR Mining by 17.09%, Orla 5.98% and Lundin Gold by 5.32%. Meanwhile, Premium Brands rallied 6.69%. Gold itself slipped US$10 to US$3,369 and WTI slid 1.65% to $64.10.
Wall Street reported a positive day as well. The S&P advanced 0.73%, the Nasdaq 1.21% and the Dow 0.18%. Another tech stock acted as the catalyst: Apple. The Mag 7 company announced it would invest more in the U.S. in reaction to Trump’s tariff threats. Apple soared 5.09% as the most influential name on Wall Street. Also active were Arista Networks up 17.49%, Super Micro Computer -18.29%, Mosaic -13.31% and Paramount Global -6.04%. Elsewhere, Bitcoin rose over US$1,500 to US$115,250. Edging higher was the U.S. 10-year yield to 4.23%.
