Modest gains amid shaky ceasefire
Monday markets rose modestly as oil rose after Trump threatened to end the current ceasefire between the US and Iran. WTI spiked 3% to US$98.40. the S&P and Dow both gained 0.19% and the Nasdaq 0.1% in a choppy session.The TSX increased only 0.1% after sinking from a strong morning.
Silver jumped 7% to US$85.85 and gold advanced US$19 to US$4,734 as materials surged on Bay Street. However, eight sectors lost ground, led by tech, staples and healthcare. Enbridge (ENB-T) was the most active name, up 1.57%, Capstone Copper rallied 2.38% and Endeavour Silver surged 9.14%. In contrast, Bausch Health tumbled 6.98% and Shopify slid 6.9%
In New York, the chipmakers led the winners once more: Intel 3.62% and Micron 6.5%. Other key names: Zoetis -7.44%, Dollar General -7.64% and Lumentum Holdings 16.52%. Bitcoin continued to climb, up 1.4% to US$81,865. The U.S. 10-year yield inched up to 4.41%.
